Getting to Heathrow

Elizabeth line to T5 is the best balance of simplicity, space and cost. Contactless accepted. Check the live destination — some trains terminate at T2&3 (free transfer). Alternatives: Heathrow Express (fastest, dearest), Piccadilly line (cheapest, slower with luggage), taxi only if awkward start or heavy bags.

Departure Sequence

BER Arrival

Transport rules: no gates — validity is your responsibility. Buy mobile tickets before boarding; validate physical ones. Plain-clothes inspectors are common and fines are substantial. Keep the phone charged. Card widely accepted; carry a little cash for small venues.

Checkpoint Charlie

Although reconstructed for visitors today, this remains one of the most significant Cold War sites in Europe. Things to notice: the original border location, the watchtower, the East/West line marked in the road, the outdoor exhibits, and remaining Wall sections nearby.

Did you know? In October 1961 American and Soviet tanks faced each other here for around 16 hours after a dispute over crossing rights — one of the Cold War's tensest moments.

Friday Evening 🍺

Brauhaus Lemke ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Hackescher Markt · traditional food · try the Helles, the Pils, and the pork knuckle
Zur letzten Instanz ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Berlin's oldest restaurant · historic and atmospheric · book ahead
Alter Fritz Solid traditional alternative if the others are full

If You're Ahead of Schedule…

Bebelplatz and the Book Burning Memorial (just off Unter den Linden), or the Soviet War Memorial in the Tiergarten on the way back west.

Saturday Evening 🍺

Hops & Barley ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Friedrichshain brewpub · own Pils, Dunkel and cider · proper local atmosphere
Boxhagener Platz area Informal brewhouse and kitchen options if you want to wander
Quieter option Head back to the Ku'damm / Savignyplatz area — Dicke Wirtin for a traditional finish
Plan B — Tempelhof sold out: start at the Berlin Wall Memorial on Bernauer Strasse (outdoor memorial landscape + documentation centre), lunch in Mitte, and use the 13:30–15:30 window for the DDR Museum only if you want a more interactive Cold War museum. Keep Classic Remise and East Side Gallery unchanged.
Pacing: Saturday has more transport than Friday. If tired or running late, drop East Side Gallery rather than rushing Classic Remise — the Gallery works even as a 25-minute sunset walk; Classic Remise deserves browsing time.

If You're Ahead of Schedule…

DDR Museum (interactive, less solemn), the Berlin Wall Memorial at Bernauer Strasse, or Teufelsberg if you're feeling adventurous and happy with the extra travel.

Safety

Emergency: 112 (fire/ambulance), 110 (police). UK Embassy: Wilhelmstrasse 70/71 — use GOV.UK for current contact details. Berlin is easy to navigate; keep bags in front of you in crowded stations and leave your passport secured at the hotel rather than carrying it routinely (except Reichstag day).

If you have one spare hour…
visit somewhere that isn't in this guide.

Berlin rewards wandering more than almost any city in Europe. If a side street, café, courtyard or old railway bridge catches your eye, follow it. Some of the best memories come from the places you weren't planning to visit.

And if all else fails, remember the Guide's most practical advice:
don't panic — and keep track of your towel. 🍺
